UN/Cefact (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) en Oasis (not-for-profit consortium op het gebied van eBusiness standaards) hebben een berichten structuur ontworpen voor e-business. ebXML staat dan ook voor e-business XML.
